The disappearing lake

People walk past large dry sinkholes of lake Cerknica, one of the biggest intermittent lakes in Europe. At its fullest the lake covers a surface of nearly 30 km2. The sinkholes are located all over the lake. In the past, the water drained into these sinkholes once in seven years, but now, with damaging human interventions in the past and recent climate change, it is drying out up to four times a year, endangering the reproduction cycles of animals living in the lake. With the help of the European Union the lake is being renaturalized in hopes of slowing down the frequency of drying out.
