15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
The Dragon's Backbone of Ping'an Village

These slopes are the rice terraces of Ping'an village in Longji, China. The "steps" were hand-dug over thousands of years. In the spring, the villagers here flood the cascading plateaus to give water to a new season of rice crops.
