I was on-call to assess and mitigate for flooding at the hospital in Niles, Michigan when the St. Joseph River crested at 17.3 feet shortly after 1 a.m. on February 22, 2018. As dawn approached, artificial and natural light combined to produce this image of deceptively supernal calm across the extended flood plain.
