The elusive and mysterious Ghost Orchid

The beautiful, mysterious and elusive Phantom Orchid, Epipogium aphyllum, is one of the rarest European orchids. It is a pinkish-brown orchid, totally devoid of chlorophyll (achlorophyllous), growing hidden from the sunlight, deep in the dark forests. This orchid entirely lacks true photosynthetic, green leaves. Instead, the leaves became small, brownish scale-like sheaths. Because of its translucent, ghostly appearance, this orchid gradually acquired an almost mythical status, hence its vernacular names, the Phantom Orchid or the Ghost Orchid. Some believe that it may take up to 17 or even 29 years between two successive flowerings of the same individual (Orchids of Romania, by Nora De Angelli & Dan Anghelescu, 2020).
