19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
The End of the Road
This photo shows the dead-end street behind Barris Kustom Industries, a fifty-plus year institution in North Hollywood that has, as of this writing, been put up for sale. George Barris was the designer of such iconic vehicles as the 1960’s Batmobile, the Munsters Koach and the Dragula. After learning of this disheartening news, I ventured to the shop hoping to get one last look at these warm childhood memories. The shop was closed, most likely never to be opened again.
