23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
The endangered Spix's macaw

The Spix's macaw pictured is a species endemic to Brazil's semiarid Caatinga region and was declared extinct in the wild in the year 2000. A few hundred individuals were still left in captivity around the world which prompted a reintroduction program that released 20 individuals in 2022. In 2025, eleven of these were still alive in the wild. Sadly, however, this photo is one of the last records of this species in the wild because a circovirus outbreak meant they had to be caught and put in quarantine for the foreseeable future. Photo taken in Curaçá, Bahia state, Brazil.
