12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Eye of the Caiman

Spectacled caiman, photographed in one of the canals of Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica. Often hidden in the murky waters, they are well camouflaged. Spectacled caimans, like all of the wildlife in Tortuguero National Park, are well protected. The area is only accessible via boat or plane. Canoing is the most respectful way to observe wildlife and the most exciting, as this picture illustrates.
