16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The fight to the top
This was taken at the base of the Gergeti glacier on the Georgian Russian border. It is one of the biggest in the region, and lays on top of the highest peak in the region - The Kazbegi mountain. Like all glaciers, it is melting ans has greatly shrunk in size due to global warming.
