19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Final Flag

On 21 January 2021, segments of the National Mall in Washington DC reopened to the public following the 59th Presidential Inauguration, allowing Americans to walk amongst the flags that had composed the Field of Flags. I watched this particular portion of the field go from full of flags to nearly barren, as many Americans claimed the flags that were representative of themselves. After seeing a group of photographers run over to a person saying how they needed the image of the final flag being removed, I noticed out of the corner of my eye an additional flag that still remained. I wait by this flag until a woman approached and carefully plucked it from the ground, moments after the other photographers got the 'final flag' shot.
