18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Giant of Quinault Rainforest
Forests are vital to the American experience. Here we see Yulia and Tyler gazing up at one of the giant trees in the Quinault Rainforest, part of Olympic National Park. Many of the worlds largest remaining specimens are found in this rain forest named for one of the many peoples who have inhabited the Olympic peninsula for ages. Spending a day among giants is proven to lower cortisol levels in the human body, (relieving stress), making these gentle giants real medicine for humanity. The Japanese are known to call this forest bathing.
