The Goddess Parade

The Indra Jatra festival is a grand celebration held annually in September (the fifth month of the Nepali calendar). In Hinduism, Indra is revered as the god of rain, while in Buddhism, he is a protective deity. During the festival, the ritual of erecting the Indra Pole, a decorated tree trunk consecrated through Vajrayana ceremonies, takes place. Living goddess Kumari (also known as the 'Virgin Goddess'), the earthly representative of the goddess, symbolizing purity, sanctity, and power, parades in an opulent chariot. Participants wear traditional Nepali masks and engage in song and dance during the festivities.
