16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
The golden afternoon sun blankets Tinuy-an Falls and her visitors.

The Philippines is rich in natural resources and one of its major source of income is nature tourism. Tinuy-an Falls is one of the most famous water bodies in Surigao del Sur with locals and foreigners flocking to the falls every single day. But this type of industry is being threatened by unregulated and unsustainable mining and logging practices. Lack of strict management and implementation of protective laws also threaten these wonderful areas. As the world is changing rapidly, one can ask, How will these communities that heavily rely on tourism adapt?
