The Gray line at Gettyburg before Union lines at Little Round Top
On July 2nd, 1863, a mile-long gray line of Confederate infantry emerged from a tree line at Gettysburg, as symbolized and recreated by this eerie grey line of rocks standing at this exact same spot where the Confederate infantry formed up. The nervous Confederate soldiers looked out at this very same view, knowing they would have to cross this 3/4 of a mile of open ground underf fire and capture the hill in front of them. Most of them never made it back.
