18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
The Gwalior Light Railway.
Passengers are travelling on roof-top. At no more than 35 kmph, train no. 52171 Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan passenger crosses barren stretches and ravines, covering the 198 km in 12 long hours. The train runs on a 2-ft narrow-gauge line, laid between 1895 and 1909 during the rule of the Scindias, and is the longest such operational service in the world. Now run by North Central Railway, the Gwalior Light Railway remains a lifeline
