The Hasidic Oasis of Brooklyn
I recently explored the Hasidic (Orthodox Jewish) neighborhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The adjoining areas of Lee and Division streets felt like a well preserved oasis of traditional Jewishness in the midst of larger, mostly Dominican, working and middle class neighborhoods. All the signs were in Yiddish or Hebrew. Hundreds of men and women on the streets were dressed in traditional black robes and headwear. This picture shows an elderly man in front of a synagogue.
