The Mentawai are an ethnic tribe with a very fascinating and well preserved traditional culture. They are dedicated to hunting and gathering, but they take only what they really need from the forest to survive. Pittoro, like all the Mentawai, raises pigs and chickens in his "uma" (wooden longhouse), but on special occasions he hunts game wild boar, small monkeys and monitor lizards with his spear. Before hunting, Pittoro apologizes to the corresponding spirit and explains the reason for this action. Mentawai never kill an animal or a plant without asking for its spirit's forgiveness.
