The Ilaje Community

“ Art in Architecture is an African Heritage. To our ancestors, Architecture, Art and crafts were inseparable. The process of building a house was a social activity in which every member of the community gave vent to their creative instincts …. “ The above statement is taken from Demas Nwoko’s book , Concrete Thinking … This statement is evident in the style of Architecture of a local Ilaje community situated in BADAGRY , Lagos . The uniformity of their architectural style , shape of building and use of locally available material which gives these community a unique sense of place . What is most evident is the fact that despite that these people don’t really have western education and formal training of Architecture, they have been able to design their own unique Architecture which works for them and also reflect their cultural belief as a people.
