The Iron Cross

I captured this image of “The Iron Cross” of Loch Ard on a misty October morning in 2024. There are a wide variety of stories related to this cross. They range from the simple explanation that it marks a shallow area where boats can run aground, to the legend of being Mary’s Rock. The legend of “Mary’s Rock”, as written by Sir Walter Scott, is that the cross marks the spot where Mary MacGregor, (wife of Rob Roy) lured an English Redcoat spy to strike him with a rock and drown him after her husband had been captured. Certainly, more interesting than a hazard warning!
