The Last Ice Man of Chimborazo

Baltazar Ushca also known as the 'Last Iceman of Chimborazo' has harvested ice from Ecuador's highest mountain since he was 15. Now in his 70s he is still climbing to the glaciers every week, long since his fellow 'hieleros' have retired. The glacial ice of Chimborazo was previously highly prized by locals for its health benefits. Baltazar has become an accidental climate activist after witnessing the glacier retreating first hand in the past 5 decades. Here he is pictured with a piece of Chimborazo ice.
