The Last Riser
Old Baldy, the lighthouse on Bald Head Island, North Carolina has 108 very narrow steps with five landings to reach the top. On the National Register for Historic Places, it is the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina. While there are lights in some places along the climb up, at the last level before the lantern room, the only light streams in from the entry hole. When I got to the last riser, a ship’s ladder, I couldn’t help but stare in awe at how the light streamed through the narrow opening onto the wall behind the ladder.
