21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Living Gem

There was a Cuban cacique once and he fell in love. He wanted to give her the most beautiful gift in the world. What was prettier than the colors of Nature? So he went on a trip to try capturing the colors of Nature and give them to his girl. Yellow of the sun, all colors from the flowers, the white of the sea foam, the green of the mountains. But it got late. The sun went down and he could not take the blue of the sky. Instead, he got the black of night. He put them on the snails and gave them all to his beloved one. The cacique's lady was in awe when she saw her beautiful gift. To thank him, she danced like she had never danced before. This story is as old as Cuba itself and every resident of Baracoa in the Eastern part of the country knows it. Polymita snails cannot be found elsewhere in the world.
