19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
The loneliest man

This place is really remote and hard-to-reach, only three men now live here. Once there were a lot of people and kolhoz in Soviet Times, but now three single men living there are forced to live out their days alone, with the harsh northern nature around. You can see Alexey Ivanovich, who was born here and lived here for whole life. He never had family, now he lives with his dog Ryzhik, taking him on fishing or hunting. 'Only Ryzhik meets me here every day for ten years' — he said. The story of Alexey is common story about the process of Russian villages disappearance.
