20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Longest Shadow
At 10,363 feet (3,159 meters), the South Sister is a very photogenic stratovolcano and the third highest mountain in the state of Oregon. It is believed that the last eruption occurred approximately 2,000 years ago. This aerial image was taken while flying my Piper Warrior single-engine plane at sunset. Nikon D810, 70-200mm.
