The Lost Gharana.

In 100 years, the family of Lalta Prasad has travelled from Pratapgarh's royal court to a slum in Chandigarh, where the city’s oldest musical instrument repairman has kept a lost tabla gharana of Hindustani classical music alive. His grandfather, Pandit Shiv Rattan Dass, and father, Pandit Mangru Dass, were royal musicians in the court of Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, with 550-bigha land as big as the French coastline city-state of Monaco. His present house measures eight steps and his workshop ends in just three. “My entire family of nine is connected to classical music,” he says. “That’s our real treasure.”
