The Luxuriant Jungles of the Lady Slipper Orchids

Lady’s Slipper Orchids are the world’s most famous and beautiful orchids. The most important characteristic of this genus is its showy and large labellum (the median, modified petal), transformed into the specific slipper-shaped, colourful, inflated pouch. During cold nights, some insects use the pouch-like labellum as a warm, night-time shelter, as the ambient temperature inside the pouch may exceed the outside temperature by up to 3°Celsius during the early morning hours (Orchids of Romania, by Nora De Angelli & Dan Anghelescu, 2020). In Roman mythology and Latin literature, Aphrodite was called Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Thus, the vernacular name of this orchid, Venus’ Shoe, comes from old legends and myths such as the following: ‘One summer’s day, Venus was caught by a violent storm. Getting lost and running through the deep forests, she lost one of her beautiful shoes, made of gold and purple. The following day, a young shepherdess, on her way to the mountains, noticed the shoe shining in the darkness of the forest and ran to pick it up, amazed by its beauty. Nevertheless, the moment she touched it, the shoe disappeared. In its place, a beautiful orchid, with flowers resembling a small shoe made of pure gold and adorned with ruby shoelaces, appeared.’
