14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The Majestic Kings River, Kings Canyon National Park

Kings Canyon National Park is the ignored, middle sibling stuck in between the ever-popular Yosemite valley and the lofty Sequoia national parks. Yet the Kings River (pictured), swollen with winter snowmelt and spring rains, speaks magnitudes of its unbridled majesty. A short jaunt from the Cedar Grove pack Station brings riders up-close-and-personal with views such as this one, taken on horseback.
