21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
The Mask

It is not a magnificent tiger, an imposing lion, a beautiful zebra, or a mighty gorilla. It is simply a White-Faced Saki, possibly considered half-ugly, but certainly curious and unusual. It would look like a mysterious character from some Hayao Miyazaki anime, a spectre with a mask, an otherworldly entity. But it is a primate from the Amazon rainforest, one more example of the richness of our biodiversity, of how amazing natural selection can be. This species presents a great difference between females and males. Males have a white face and a black body.
