The Mongoose Tree
On the first afternoon of my latest trip to the Mara we left camp looking for lions when movement at the bottom of a tree caught our attention. As we got closer we saw a large number of mongooses rushing into a hole at the bottom of the tree. Suddenly, some of the mongooses started reappearing in an opening higher up. There was a passage inside the tree that they were using. We decided to postpone our quest for lions and waited patiently for the largest number of mongooses to appear in the opening. It took over 2 hours to get 5 mongooses looking straight at the camera.
