22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
The night of the candles

8 days before the day of the dead you can hear the ringing of the bells in all the chapels and the main church of the town, tradition marks that all the deceased faithful are about to arrive; For the community of Huitziltepec these are sacred dates, the connection they have with those who are no longer there is unique and unrepeatable and leads them to meet again in such a special bond. For them, offerings are beyond symbolism, they represent the encounter they have with Mictlán, when they arrive at 6 pm. Most undertake a journey to the municipal pantheon in which a ritual is established between the living and the dead in which the light of earthly life is delivered to eternal life, and in a significant conviviality it seems that they are among us; While some are in the pantheon, some others are on their altars making a kind of ancestral guard. Huitziltepec not only shows us how the day of the dead is lived from a different perspective, but also the connection between all beings.
