Ivory and rhino horn poaching receive - and rightly so - a lot of attention. However there is another, silent and more powerful aspect of poaching - snares; they kill indiscriminately and pervasively. This hyena in South Luangwa National Park was strong enough to break the snare (probably destined for an antelope) but was left with wire deeply embedded in her neck. She eventually will be darted, the wire removed and hopefully the wounds would heal but a weaker animal would have perished...
