18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Power and Pain of Memory

Captain John Seel, a close friend and graduate of NYU School of Law, volunteered to serve in the US Army and go to war in Vietnam. On his first day, Captain Seel was killed by a Viet Cong mine set in the base at Long Bin. I was a high school student at that time, and welded into my soul is the memory of being given the American flag draped over his coffin by his wife. I recently visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall, and found my friend’s John name etched into eternity. This was my reaction.
