The Present Past

Pictured is a self portrait and a very rare glimpse inside the the old Utica State Psychiatric Hospital. This specific building was the main hospital which opened in 1843 and closed in 1978. The shot itself was taken on one of the original patient wards with patient rooms on either side of a very long ward hallway with about 15 ft ceilings. It was also built at a time of limited electricity so there were originally skylights that went from the roof down through the ward floors which had glass in them in order to reach the lower floors with daylight. The wards were also set up to maximize natural light which you can somewhat see in original effect shining in through the patient room doorways. There was also a sun porch at the end of each ward where patients could absorb even more light throughout the day.
