23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Ranch

What is left of an old homestead known as "The Ranch", still owned by the 3rd generation, Jensen family farm. With a hope and a dream, Andy & Florence Jensen bought 250 acres and an existing homestead to begin their lives mid-depression era. With 100 sheep and 4-5 milk cows, their family farm started and soon grew. Andy, with horse and sleigh, would take his wife 5 miles to Bennington so she could teach in a one room school. While he waited, Andy would draw and paint to pass the time, until it was time to trek home. Soon their family would need to move just over the hill, closer to the highway where they eventually had a new dairy and home. This original homestead still stands today as a memory of a simpler time and life.
