14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Recognition and Celebration of the African American Influence

David Adjaye's National Museum of African American History and Culture, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., represents the recognition and celebration of the African American experience and influence in shaping the Unite States of America as we know it today. The museum boldly sits on the National Mall, with its bronze exterior whose design calls back to the ironwork of slaves in Louisiana and the metal work of the Yoruba People of Western Africa. The museum is unapologetically black, and stands as a testament to the power and influence of the black community in the United States.
