I recently took my daughter, a high school junior, on some college tours in Boston over February school break. I went to college there, so it was a very exciting and nostalgic trip for me. One school we visited was Tufts University in Somerville. I had a good friend that went there when I was in college so spent a lot of time on that campus and also in nearby Davis Square in Somerville. After the tour at Tufts, we drove into Davis Square and parked, looking for a place to eat. We didn't have to go far, when we saw a diner, The Rosebud, and the memories of the many times I spent there with friends in my college days came flooding back to me! We decided to go in for a bite, and luckily it wasn't crowded so we were seated in one of the front windows and we both ordered hamburgers! While we ate, I noticed someone outside across the street taking a picture of the restaurant. I wondered if we would be in his picture and if he could see us in the window. I made a mental note to myself to take a picture when we left, to remember this special moment with my daughter at the very beginning of her college journey, so connected to my own college days, but when we exited The Rosebud, I was quickly distracted since we were hurrying to catch to the "T" to go into downtown Boston to visit BU for another tour. Many hours later, we arrived back to Davis Square and walked to the car, and it was dark. And as I was about to jump in the car I remembered (after all!) to snap a few pictures of The Rosebud and felt lucky that the traffic light must have turned red down the block, because all busy Friday night traffic had stopped for a moment, giving me a clear shot. The Rosebud is a registered historic American place, and it's been around since the 1940's, and it meant so much to me that it was still there, and thriving, and that I could share an experience with my daughter there, over twenty years after my own college days. ( I thought of the movie "Citizen Kane," too, which I first learned about in college)
