The sacred ceremony begins with the Pū (Hawaiian Conch Shell)

The blowing of the Pū, a deep part of the Hawaiian culture, has multiple uses and communicates various meanings in both Religious and secular traditions. In this picture, the Pū is marking the beginning of the mass celebrating Princess Kaʻiulani's birthday at the Royal Mausoleum of Hawai'i Chapel.
