The salt marsh at Caumsett State Park during low tide.
Standing on the eastern side of the marsh and looking west, the picture shows one of the many mud flats exposed during low tide. In the background is the eastern end of Fly Island. The lower trees on the left are actually on the mainland. Separating these two areas is a narrow channel, which is filled during high tide. All of Caumsett State Park covers 1,520 acres, 89 of which is the marsh. The colors of the marsh grass change as the seasons change. It starts out green, changes to yellow and green, then to a golden brown. It is truly amazing how, twice a day all of the water is able to flow into the marsh, and twice a day all of the water is able to flow out of the marsh.
