The scent of Himba women

A woman, inside her hut light a small fire to burn aromatic herbs and the resin obtained from the Namibian myrrh (Commiphora multijuga tree). The Himba women, a semi-nomadic tribe who have lived in northern Namibia, spend hours on their dress, intricate jewelry and beauty ritual such red ochre body paint. They live in a dry area where there’s little or no access to water so the do not bathe, but perfume themselves by taking real baths of scented smoke to purify their bodies and clothes. The smoke has also an anti-bacterial effect.
