The Shady SIde

One of the most well known areas in Death Valley is Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. The ripple patterned sand is best seen on weekdays, early mornings, and sunset, to avoid footprints of excited travelers. Less than one percent of the desert is covered with dunes, yet the shadowed ripples and stark, graceful curves define "desert" in our imaginations.
