13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
The Shepherd

An Ethiopian shepherd of the Oromia region leads his herd into a narrow gorge. At the end of the path there is a drinking trough for animals, fed by a very deep well. The lack of ground water caused by drought has forced the Borana people (warrior shepherds) to seek water 30 meters beneath the surface. The shepherds walk many hours every day to reach the wells.
