The silence of an Iranian woman

While striving to complete my university project on the theme of ‘Silence,’ I decided to use a single frame to depict the silence of a woman within the current societal and national context of my country. As I delved into the meaning of silence, I realized that it is always intertwined with ‘imposition’ and ‘patience.’ When we choose to remain silent, it doesn’t mean we have nothing to say; rather, after a moment of pause and reflection, our preference becomes patience, or the circumstances compel silence upon us. But regardless of how we view it—whether positively or negatively—silence carries within it a complex duality of freedom and helplessness. This is true even when we choose silence ourselves, perhaps to prevent words from causing further damage and to allow the situation to settle. It is an old saying that dialogue is the solution to problems, the key that eliminates misunderstandings and improves conditions. Yet, they never spoke of the times when speaking might superficially lessen the complexity and confusion of human relationships, but a part of our inner self remains forever silent… Because while speaking may potentially shift the external situation in a positive direction, the feeling that has taken root inside us—the feeling of being misunderstood—persists in a corner of our heart and mind eternally, leading ultimately to silence.
