The silhouette of a ʻōhiʻa tree in the morning sunlight on Kilauea
A surreal morning from Kilauea while on an overnight geology field trip with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Standing on an active volcano, just below the ground groundwater drips onto magma-heated rocks, and steam escapes to the world above, creating a mysterious haze. Early in the morning, the sunʻs rays illuminated the steam, creating a heavenly aura that poured through the leaves of the native ʻōhiʻa trees, making for an unforgettable start to that day.
