A lion emerges from the grass with calculated intent, eyes fixed on a young calf. But the herd is alert — sensing danger, the buffalo rally and charge. In this split second, the hunter becomes the hunted, and the balance of power shifts. We had been following this lion for about an hour. He wasn't with a pride and his brother was somewhere in the area, according to our guide, who also informed us that he looked hungry and had his eye on a bufflao herd in the distance. It suprised us at first, because it's not usual for a sole lion to attack a full grown buffalo amongst the herd. As we got closer to the herd, we noticed there were two calfs that were present. His plan was to attack the pride, injury a calf, then run and go back into hiding. The herd would eventually give up on the calf and leave it behind. It was a good plan, unfortunately it did not work.
