The Story of Preserving Heritage

This is the last surviving Malar boat of Bengal, a traditional wooden vessel whose design dates back over 3,000 years. Today, rapid urbanization has pushed this cultural heritage to the brink of extinction. Measuring 93 feet (28 meters), the boat rests beneath bamboo scaffolding—the only method available in Bangladesh for turning and repairing such massive wooden hulls. Ropes are threaded through holes and lifted onto pulleys, while more than 100 people work together to overhaul the vessel. The process requires countless intricate steps, a labor of devotion that is increasingly rare. Once a vital part of Bengal’s identity, the Malar boat now stands as a fragile reminder of a disappearing tradition.
