20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The Sunrise Row

When my phone rang at 4:15 in the morning, I wasn't surprised. My friends know that I'm up and on my way out to shoot the sunrise. Being so far east, the sun rises early, especially so close to the longest day of the year. This particular morning it was an invitation to go for a row. It wasn't looking like the clouds were going to light up and I was thrilled to be a passenger in the boat that I had so often seen and photographed rowing across the harbor while I was taking my daily sunrise picture. Regardless of the amount of color, any morning that you get to see the sunrise, it's a good day!
