15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
the television vill not be revolutionized

Flip Cassidy, artist. East Jesus, Slab City, Salton Sea, California. East Jesus gets it’s name from a slang term that was used in the Midwest back in the day where a person would describe really off the beaten path as being East Jesus. It lays at the outskirts of Slab City, the last free place in America, a campsite without electricity or running water where live a community of people who escape modern society. Many are destitute. Others just don’t want to be found. According to their website: Together, the inhabitants of East Jesus provide a refuge for artists, musicians, survivalists, writers, scientists, laymen and other wandering geniuses.
