In Uganda, we trekked to see the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. We spent time with the Rushegura Group, a family of 17 mountain gorillas. With 17 in the family there was lots going on in all directions. The Silverback's role is to mediate conflict within the group and protect the family for danger. During our encounter, the dominant Silverback named Kabukojo, quietly maneuvered through the forest. He spent most of his time deep in forest and seldom made eye contact. He was laying down in the forest watching the young gorillas playing in front of me. He put his chin in his hand, gazing off into the forest, with a look of thoughtfulness. I was curious about what he was thinking about and this image reminded me of the statue called The Thinker... Truly a magical moment.
