The tiny island of Gardi Sugdub in the Guna Yala region of Panama
Garti Sugdup is an island belonging to the indigenous Guna Yala people of Panama, crammed with homes right to the edge of the water. But soon it won’t be so crowded. Some 300 families are migrating to the mainland because of the impact of climate change. Every year the sea level rises a few millimeters, eroding valuable living space. To fend off the rising sea, the residents build barriers from coral rocks dug out of the sea, but it’s only a temporary band-aid and damages the local marine ecosystem.
