The Tree of Life
The village of Deni Malick Gueye, 20 km away from Dakar (Senegal), is the theatre of a traditional healing ceremony called Ndeup. In Lebou mythology there are several spirits, called Rab. These spirits can take possession of people, manifesting themselves through mental illnesses. Depression is thought of as spirits that enter the unwell person. The ceremony lasts several days and is musical and movement based. A person being treated will have their senses overwhelmed by an intense rhythmic drumming performed around them.
