The universality of smiling

This old, 90-year old man, I met when I visited a small village in Portugal. We drove onto the church square looking for a place to have lunch. But on the town's square we only found 2 men and 1 old lady sitting. The men were chatting with each other and the woman was doing her laundry on this old-fashioned washing-board and concrete sink. As I speak Spanish, which is quite similar to Portuguese I started talking with them about the weather. It was clear that it didn't happen that often that two tourists entered their small village. So after a few minutes we saw another old man (the one on the photo) stumbling towards us with his walking stick. He smiled his toothless smile and joined our conversation by mumbling his words. I didn't understand a word he was saying, until he pointed at my feet. I was wearing flip-flops and a summer dress as it was about 22 degrees Celsius, which for me feels very summer-like in October. As he pointed at me he laughed and laughed. Then he turned to himself and pulled up his trousers. Underneath them he was wearing these long underpants. The contrast couldn't be bigger. He was wearing winter's clothes with his woolen sweater and 2 pairs of trousers versus me in my summer's clothes. The man couldn't stop laughing and even continued after we had said goodbye. Of course we laughed with him. To me this was such a proof that smiling really is universal and by smiling we totally understand eachother without having to know eachothers language.
